What are three unique items you plan to include in your kit in addition to the suggested items from the list?
One of the most important items I would include in my Ready kit is one of my dearest possessions, my Rosary, given to me at my confirmation, as I believe part of my response would be prayer. My kit would also include my daughter’s stuffed toy rabbit to assist in comforting her. In addition, I would be certain to have all of my family contact numbers just in case they were needed.
What would you say to fellow Georgians about preparing for a large-scale emergency?
Given that research conducted by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency indicates that almost 80 percent of Georgians are not prepared and the Hispanic population tends to be less prepared on average, it’s critical that Hispanic residents take the time to create a Ready kit and a communications plan. Spanish information is available on this site via Google Translator, and Listo.gov is also a great resource. It only takes one event to devastate your community, but being prepared makes you your own first responder and empowers individuals, families and businesses.
Have you or a loved one experienced an emergency where a Ready kit would have come in handy?
Yes. My family and I were in a tornado that destroyed many of our possessions when I was a child. We had a flashlight, but would have benefitted tremendously from additional preparedness items close at hand. In that instance, I recall praying through the tornado.
