What are the three unique items you plan to include in your Ready kit in addition to the suggested items?
My brother and I have asthma so we included extra asthma pumps. My grandma takes a lot of medicine so we put it in a pillbox and marked it with an expiration date. I also included a Bible because emergencies are a time to pray and ask God to protect us. I included Uno cards, my family’s favorite game, to help us relax and have fun.
What would you say to fellow Georgians about preparing for a large-scale emergency?
Having a Ready kit and a plan are important so you won’t panic and make bad decisions. You are never too young to get involved in emergency preparedness because kids need to know how to react during a disaster and how to help their families. Parents have a lot of things to handle so a family meeting is helpful to discuss an emergency plan that can make a difference in the life or death of your family.
Have you or a loved one experienced an emergency where a Ready kit would have come in handy?
When the tornado hit downtown Atlanta, it came close to our house. We looked out and saw baseball-sized hail. We grabbed blankets and ran to the basement. We sat on the steps and covered up. Without power, we didn’t know how bad the storm was or what areas had been hit. A NOAA Weather Radio is exactly what we needed. We now have one in our Ready kit.
